Global Ports Holds Career Guidance Week at Admiral Makarov State University

Global Ports, Russia’s leading operator of marine container terminals (part of Delo Group), held its biannual Global Ports Week , a series of career guidance events for students at the Admiral Makarov State University of Maritime and Inland Shipping in St. Petersburg.

From April 15 to 19, 2024, 175 students came to listen to and gain insights into ports industry from Global Ports’ experts. The programme included lectures at the University, tours to Global Ports’ multipurpose marine terminal Petrolesport and practical training at the port and the university. A special event of the week was a business simulation called “The Dream Port”. Students had to build a model strategy of a marine cargo terminal, making sure all aspects, from geography to economic and social challenges, are taken into account.

Yakov Fedorenko, Human Resources Director for Global Ports, notes that the company bases its approach to cooperation with educational institutions on students’ career interests.

“Speakers and topics for sessions with future professionals are chosen both based on requests from students and our understanding of relevant topics in the industry. This year, students demonstrated significant interest to everything related to improving operational efficiency at the port, safety culture and ESG. This customer-centric approach is yielding good results: in 2023, 70 students at Makarov University completed their internship at our terminals. In total, 23 graduates have joined us in the last two years”.

Global Ports Week this April took place at the Admiral Makarov State University of Maritime and Inland Shipping for the fifth time. The company regularly organises student career guidance tours and profile lectures at its terminals with the participation of experienced experts and managers. In 2023, in partnership with the university, Global Ports launched an industrial training program at Petrolesport for the students majoring in Transport Process Technology. At the classes, future specialists are taught the details of handling and storage of different types of cargo, peculiarities of working with port equipment and special machinery, document management and electronic services.
